Theobald von Oer

Theobald Reinhold Freiherr von Oer ( born October 9, 1807 at home Nottbeck Stromberg; † January 30, 1885 in Lindenhof near Coswig ) was a German painter, illustrator and etcher. He was especially known for his portraits, genre and historical paintings.

Life

Theobald von Oer was the son of the Westphalian district administrator Clemens Freiherr von Oer. His brother Maximilian Freiherr von Oer (1806-1846) was a writer. Painted early in his childhood and he liked to draw and talented. At the age of twelve he became ill with scarlet fever and thereby lost his hearing, and partly also the language. As a 19 -year-old he began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Dresden (now College of Fine Arts in Dresden ). He was there quickly master student and moved to further studies at the Dusseldorf Art Academy.

From 1839 lived Oer in Dresden. On October 12, 1840, he married Marie born in Dresden Schumann ( 1816-1878 ), daughter of the President of the Higher Court of Appeal Ernst Schumann; from the marriage several children were born.

Theobald von Oer died in 1885 and found his last resting place in the Old Catholic Cemetery in Dresden.

Work

His focus was the history painting. Important influence on his style, he thanked a trip to Italy. One of his most famous works commissioned The Princess Gallitzin in the circle of her friends from the year 1864.
