Theodor Gomperz

Theodor Gomperzes ( born March 29, 1832 in Brno (Brünn), then Moravia; † August 29, 1912 in Baden bei Wien, Lower Austria ) was an Austrian philosopher and classical philologist.

Life

Born into an assimilated Jewish merchant family of scholars and was the son of Joshua Philipp Feibelman Gomperzes (1782-1857) and Henriette Gomperzes, born Auspitz ( 1792-1881 ). Theodor Gomperzes was the brother of Josephine Gomperzes, Josephine married name of Wertheimstein (1820-1894), the industrialist Max von Gomperzes (1822-1913) and Julius von Gomperzes (1823-1909) and Sophie Gomperzes, nee Sophie Todesco (1825 - 1895).

From his marriage with Elise Sichrovsky (1848-1929), the philosopher Heinrich Gomperzes (1873-1942), and the sculptor and writer Bettina Gomperzes emerged ( 1879-1948 ).

Theodor Gomperzes 1847-1849 studied at the Philosophical College in Brno and then in Vienna with Hermann Bonitz. Gomperzes devoted himself as a private scholar further studies and qualified as a professor without a doctorate degree in 1867. In 1873 he became Professor of Classical Philology in Vienna. 1896 to 1909 he published his three-volume magnum opus Greek thinkers. In 1900 he became Professor Emeritus; and was succeeded by Emil Szanto.

He is buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Döblinger Cemetery (Group 17, Number 6) in Vienna. In 1927 in Vienna Ottakring ( 16th district ) was named the Gomperzgasse after him.

Honors
