Theodor Magnus Fries

Theodor ( Thore ) Magnus Fries ( born October 28, 1832, the parish Femsjö, Jönköping County, † March 29, 1913 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Th.Fr. "; earlier was also the abbreviation " Th.Fries Jr." in use.

Life and work

The son of the botanist Elias Magnus Fries (1794-1878) began in 1851 to study at the University of Uppsala. Already in 1853 he became an assistant at the local botanical gardens and the museum. In 1857 he became a lecturer of botany, 1862 Adjunct same and the Ekonomie. Fries, since 1865 member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, was appointed in 1877 professor of botany and worked intensively with lichens. From 1902 to 1903 he wrote a two-volume biography of Carl Linnaeus ( 1707-1778 ).
