Théodore-Charles Gruyère

Theodore Charles Gruyère ( born September 17, 1813 in Paris, † 1885) was a French sculptor.

Gruyère debuted in 1836 as a student of RAMEI and Augustin -Alexandre Dumont with a group ( young girl and her faithful guardian ), which of them was wearing a medal.

He acquired larger reputation in the following years by Gaius Marius before Carthage, David before Saul, singing and especially by the seven heroes of Thebes (1839 ), which earned him the Prix de Rome. Similarly, by Chactas to Atala grave and Mucius Scaevola (1845 and 1846 ).

His other works are partly busts, some statues of saints for several churches, partly allegorical sculptures, such as the sandstone statues of St. Basil and Ezekiel in the Church of St. Augustine (1865 ), the figures of the cities of Laon, and Arras on the facade the Gare du Nord, the marble group of maternal tenderness (1869 ) and one bas-relief in the Church of St. Thomas d'Aquin and on the facade of the Opéra Garnier.
