Théodore Deck

( Joseph ) Théodore Deck, ( born January 2, 1823 in Guebwiller, † May 15, 1891 in Paris ) was a ceramist of Historicism and Art Nouveau.

Life

Deck studied physics and chemistry and used the results of his studies initially on silk dyeing and later on the fabrication of Fayenceöfen. After he extended his knowledge while traveling in Germany, Austria and Hungary, he founded in 1856 a furnace factory in Paris and began from 1859 experiments in ceramics, the vervollkommten so fast that he was already 1861, the difficult in their technique called Oiron encaustic ( Henri -deux- vessels) could replicate.

Later, he invented a new type of pottery which give in imitation of ancient Chinese and Persian faience an even richer metallic reflex. Since he worked as employees some painters (among others Jean Louis Hamon and Albert Anker ) and its products also received a high artistic value. Due to his achievements at the World Exhibition of 1878 in Paris him the Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honor was awarded. In 1887 he became head of the porcelain manufactory at Sèvres ( "Manufacture royale de porcelaine de Sèvres ").

The Musée du Florival in Théodore Deck birthplace Guebwiller has the largest collection of his works.

Théodore Deck is located in the Cimetière Montparnasse buried. According to him, a street in Paris, Rue Théodore Deck named ( in the 15th arrondissement ).
