Theodore Hesburgh

Theodore Martin Hesburgh, CSC, ( born May 25, 1917 in Syracuse, New York ) is a Roman Catholic priest and university professor. He was 1952-1987 President of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

Hesburgh was from 1957 to 1972 a member of the United States Civil Rights Commission, whose chairman from 1969. Hesburgh was also a significant figure of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States from the 1950s up to the 1990s. It was in 1964 awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1965 with the Grand Gold Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria and in 1999 with the Congressional Gold Medal.

  • NCAA Gerald R. Ford Award ( 2004)

Hesburgh were awarded 150 honorary doctorates.

The asteroid (1952 ) Hesburgh was named after him.
