Theodoros Kolokotronis

Theodoros Kolokotronis (Greek Θεόδωρος Κολοκοτρώνης; born April 3, 1770 in Ramavouni, (Messinia / Greece), † February 15, 1843 in Athens). Was a Greek freedom fighter, guerrilla leader, and Field Marshal in the Revolution of 1821, he is also known as the " Old Morea ".

Even in his youth he passed the Peloponnese as a band leader. When he was followed in 1806 by the Turks and was forced to flee to Zante, he stepped onto the under British administration Ionian islands into military service and later became a Major erected there Greek Regiment. Since 1821 Kolokotronis was next to " Petrobey " Petros Mavromichalis as one of the main leaders of the Greeks. The National Assembly at Astros appointed him in 1823 as commander of the Peloponnese, and soon after he became Vice President of the Executive Council. Following the assassination of President Kapodistrias on 9 October 1831 whose stalwart was Kolokotronis, he was elected a member of the Provisional Government Commission and later fought the seven- Commission, who led the government until the arrival of King Otto. Not less hostile he was accorded to the reign of King Otto. He was accused of having made ​​conspiracy trials and sentenced after his arrest on June 7, 1834 along with his brother- Plaputas Koliopulos by the Court to Nauplia to death for treason. However, this penalty turned the king into a twenty-year imprisonment and issued it to him when he took office on June 1, 1835 even entirely.

Theodoros Kolokotronis died on 15 February 1843 in Athens. 1901 was erected a monument to him in Nauplia. Many Greek cities named in his honor streets and squares.
