Theophilus Howard, 2nd Earl of Suffolk

Theophilus Howard, 2nd Earl of Suffolk (* 1584, † June 3, 1640 in Suffolk House ), was an English nobleman and politician.

Theophilus Howard was the eldest son of Thomas Howard, who was raised in 1597 by Elizabeth I by a Writ of Summons to the Baron Howard de Walden and later became also the dignity of Earl of Suffolk. Theophilus was born in 1584 at an unknown day and baptized on August 13, 1584 in Walden. He graduated from Cambridge in 1598 at Magdalen College in 1605 and Master of Arts. He died on June 3, 1640 in Suffolk House, and was buried in Walden.

Political career

His meteoric career began as a member of the British House of Commons. He was elected in 1605 for the constituency of Maldon in parliament and remained for that constituency Member of Parliament until 1610, thereafter to serve as a civil servant of the British crown on numerous increasingly important administrative offices. He began his management career with the office of Lieutenant of the Gentlemen Pensioners in 1605 and remained in that post until 1614. Subsequent to this activity, the Office of the Captain took over this institution from July 1614 to December 1619 and after a short break again from January 1620 to 1635. In addition, he was since 1605 a member of Gray 's Inn, Joint Steward of the Royal Manors was in Wales from 30 June 1606 and also Councillar for the Colony of Virginia from 23 May 1609.

On February 8, 1609, he was appointed by a Writ of Acceleration due to premature award of the subsidiary title Baron Howard de Walden his father in the House of Lords. Finally, he also took in March 1609 the post of Governor of Guernsey. Progeny

In March 1612 he married Elizabeth Home († 19 August 1633 ), daughter of George Home, 1st Earl of Dunbar. The marriage produced nine children were born.
