The Thetis - class is a class of frigate inspection vessels in size, which is used by the Danish Navy since 1991. The four ships were built by Skibsværft Svendborg A / S in Svendborg on Funen.

History

The four ships of the Danish Navy were put into service in 1991 and 1992. They are used among other things for the coastal defense of Greenland and Iceland. To allow year-round use in the northern hemisphere, the ships of the Thetis - class, up to a thickness of 80 cm to break ice.

The somewhat unusual vessels classed Thetis class based on a design with a wide range of applications. Naming

The Thetis, Triton and the Vædderen (Danish: Aries ( constellation )) were all named after symbols of Norse mythology, only the Hvidbjørnen (or old Danish: Polar Bear ) was named in honor of Greenland after the native wildlife.
