Thietmar, Margrave of the Saxon Ostmark

Thietmar (c. 990; † January 10, 1030 ) was since 1015 Margrave of Lusatia and in Swabia, Count and Nordthüringgau.

Life

Thietmar, who, when Thietmar ( II ) is referred to in the older literature in reference to his grandfather, Thietmar I, Margrave of Meissen, Merseburg and Nordmark, came from the family of Bill Unger. His eponymous grandfather Thietmar was the first husband of Suanhilde, a daughter of Duke Hermann Billung. He was the son of Gero and his wife Adelheid.

After his death in the Polish campaign, he was in 1015 Margrave of Mark Lausitz. He lost large parts of it after the Peace of Bautzen in 1018 to Poland. Since 1015 he also fought against the claims of Count Siegfried, the son Hodos, but was able to maintain with the help of the Emperor Henry II. He promoted first German settlements in Lusatia. The Mark Lausitz was only recaptured after his death by his son Hodo. After his death, the family died out. Margrave Thietmar was buried in Helmarshausen monastery.
