Thirteenth

As a thirteenth ( rare: " Tredezim ", from the Latin tredecimus: " The Thirteenth " ) or Terzdezime is called in music an interval, which is composed of an octave and sixth and so thirteen pitches of a diatonic, heptatonic scale spans (eg as C -A '). The great thirteenth ( a) consists of 21 semitones, the small thirteenth ( b) 20 semitones.

The term is also applicable when the interval a sixth and two or more octaves spans. Typically, it is used only to highlight the additional octave between the fundamental and sixth. Otherwise, the name to be preferred " sixth ".

Furthermore, the thirteenth in the jazz harmony, the sixth third above the root ( c ) and is valued in the chord symbols as "13".

Related to the partials series, such as organ stops, the 13 partial tone is referred to as the thirteenth. This thirteenth to the next lower octave has a frequency ratio of 13:8.
