Thoiry (Savoie)

Thoiry is a town in the French department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes.

Geography

Thoiry is located at 643 m above sea level. M., approximately 9 km east of the town of Chambery (air line). The farming village extends to the west of the department of Savoie, in the southern part of the massif of the Wallows: a scenic location on the eastern flank of the Leysse, at the foot of Mont Margériaz.

The area of ​​17.75 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the massif of the Wallows. The western boundary runs along the Leysse ( tributary of Lac du Bourget ), which here flows in a valley to the south. Below Thoiry takes them from the left to the Ruisseau de la Reysse, which also forms the southern boundary of the area with its notched valley. From the Leysse, the municipality's area extends eastward across the slope of Thoiry and on the adjacent ridge to the Pointe des Torchets ( 1469 m above sea level. M. ) and the Mont de la Croix ( 1614 m above sea level. M. ). In the north, the valley is a side summit of Mont Margériaz surmounted ( 1780 m above sea level. History

In the 11th century Thoiry is first mentioned. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Torius and means as much as with the people of Torius ( Toriacum ). Since the Middle Ages Thoiry belonged to the rule Arvey.

Attractions

The village church of Thoiry was built in the 19th century. A chapel stands in the hamlet of La Fougere.

Population

With 450 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Thoiry is one of the small communities of the department of Savoie. After the population declined sharply in the first half of the 20th century, a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1980s again.
