Thomas C. Chittenden

Thomas Cotton Chittenden ( born August 30, 1788 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, † August 22 1866 in Watertown, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1839 and 1843 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Cotton Chittenden was born about five years after the end of the Revolutionary War in Stockbridge in the Berkshire County. He moved to Adams in Jefferson County. Then he studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1813 and then began practicing in Adams. Politically he belonged to the Whig party.

In the congressional elections of 1838, for the 26th Congress Chittenden in the 18th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Isaac H. Bronson on March 4, 1839. He was re-elected once and then retired after the March 3, 1843 from the Congress of.

In 1840 he was appointed as a judge in Jefferson County - a position which he held for five years. After taking up his judicial office, he moved to Watertown. Then he went back to his work as a lawyer after, but also pursued banking transactions. He died on 22 August 1866 in Watertown, and was then buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
