Thomas of Brotherton, 1st Earl of Norfolk

Thomas of Brotherton ( born June 1, 1300 Brotherton (North Yorkshire ); † August 4, 1338 ) was a prince of the British royal Plantagenet dynasty and son of King Edward I of England and Margaret of France. His older half-brother was King Edward II of England.

Life

Thomas was born in Brotherton, while his mother was pregnant went about hunting there. Probably he was born prematurely. His mother named him after Thomas Beckett, which they believed to owe the preservation of their lives. Originally, the title of Earl of Cornwall was provided for him this dignity was, however, awarded in 1306 by Edward II Piers Gaveston on its favorites. As compensation he received in 1312 the dignity of Earl of Norfolk, and was appointed on 10 February 1316 Marshal of England. During the absence of his half brother in Scotland and France, he served as a deputy in the government of the country.

Thomas said to have come into his character, his military abilities and his physical attributes more like his father than his royal half-brother. He was an enemy of the favorite Hugh le Despenser and supported in 1326 his brother's wife Isabella and her lover Roger Mortimer in Edward II and disempowerment Despensers. Just four years later he was involved. At its overthrow by his nephew, King Edward III. Thomas was buried after his death at the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds.

Marriages and descendants

He completed his first marriage in 1320 with Alice Hales († 1327 ), which is described as a special beauty. Their children were:

1335 he married Mary de Brewes († 1361/62 ), with whom he had one daughter:
