Thomas Sprat

Life and work

Sprat the son of the Thomas Sprat, the Minister of Beaminster was was. Sprat attended Wadham College, Oxford University; he received the BA 1655, MA 1657 to 1669 and the Doctor of Divinity.

From 1657 to 1670 Sprat was a Fellow of Wadham College. From 1660 to 1669 he was a canon of Lincoln, 1669-1683 canon of Westminster. In 1670 he was rector of Uffington in Lincolnshire. He served as chaplain to George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and 1676-1688 for the king. From 1679 to 1683 he was Rector of St Margaret 's, Westminster; 1681-184, he worked as a canon of Windsor. From 1683 to 1713 he was Dean of Westminster. He started the renovation work at Westminster Abbey, conducted by Christopher Wren. From 1684 to 1713 he was Bishop of Rochester. In 1685 he was dean of the Chapel Royal and Clerk of the Closet.

Sprat married Helen, the daughter of Devereux Wolseley of Ravenstone in Staffordshire. He died on 20 May 1713 a stroke. Sprat is on the south side of St Nicholas' Chapel, Westminster Abbey, buried.

Sprat has become known primarily for his 1667 published History of the Royal Society of London. He was "original Fellow" of the Royal Society; he was taken on May 20, 1663. His son of the same Thomas Sprat (1679-1720) was Archdeacon of Rochester and also a member of the Royal Society.
