Thor Heyerdahl (ship)

The Thor Heyerdahl - formerly Tinka, Marga Henning, Silke and Minnow - is a 1930 built vessel now sails under the German flag as a three-masted topsail schooner (three- masted sailing ship). The ship was named after the Norwegian explorer and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl ( 1914-2002 ).

Today, the Thor Heyerdahl goes in the sense of experiential learning, especially with teams of young fellow sailors in the Baltic Sea.

Ship history

The Thor Heyerdahl was built in 1930 under the name of " Tinka " at the shipyard Smit & Zoon in Westerbroek (Netherlands) as a motor ship with auxiliary sails. First port of registry was Hamburg.

Over the next 50 years, the ship was used under various names as a cargo ship to South Africa and in the Caribbean. During this period the carrying capacity of the ship in 1951 expanded to 300 tons by the hull was lengthened amidships by a few meters.

In 1979, the run-down coaster of two sailing enthusiasts was purchased and rebuilt from 1979 to 1983 for three-masted topsail schooner. High Seas High School
