Thorkild Bjørnvig

Thorkild Strange Bjørnvig ( born February 2, 1918 in Aarhus, † March 5, 2004 in Aarhus ) was a Danish poet, novelist and translator of German poetry.

Life and work

Thorkild Bjørnvig grew up in Tokyo and later studied comparative literature at the University of Aarhus. His dissertation on the writer Martin A. Hansen appeared 1964. 1970 he married the politician Ingrid Bjørnvig.

In 1947 he debuted with the poetry book Stjærnen bag Gavlen (star behind the gable ) with descriptions of a young love. From 1948 to 1950 he was a staff member of the magazine Heretica. An important work is the 1968 published collection of poetry Ravnen ( The Raven ); the title refers to Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven. The work consists of 12 songs, in which he deals with his fate and staged an exuberant self- billing.

Bjørnvig not only wrote poetry, but poetry was also a performer and translated many poems from the Germans, among others, all poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. The themes of his poetry are influenced by natural, he struggled against their destruction by man; his main motives are childhood, love and death.

The poet was a close friend of the writer Karen Blixen. Both were members of the Danish Academy in 1960. Through its cooperation and friendship he reported the pact in the first volume of his autobiography, published in 1974 in the Sansoni book. ( Pagten. With venskab med Karen Blixen ), which was published in German translation. In the other books he wrote about his childhood, his study time and the time after the war. For the translation of his Rilke poems ( Udsat på hjertets Bjerge ) he received the 1996 award- 20.000 EUR Übersetzerpreis the EU, the Prix Aristeion.
