Thorleif Schjelderup-Ebbe

Leif Thor Schjelderup - Ebbe ( born November 12, 1894 in Oslo, † June 8, 1976 in Oslo) was a Norwegian zoologist, who first the pecking order in chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus ) observed and described in his dissertation in 1921.

Biography

The he first observed and described behaviors that led Schjelderup - Ebbe by his own chickens, which he reared since he was ten. The observed of him dominance hierarchy in chickens and other birds, let him come to the conclusion that within the group, first a dominant animal gets the food right before lower-ranking animals get their turn. Schjelderup - Ebbe could also detect exceptions in each hierarchy order in chickens in his observations. He recognized this so-called " triangles " in which the higher -standing chicken A chicken B pecked the lower, the lower B C C but again pecked chicken A. Schjelderup - Ebbe could thus detect anomalies which deviate from a rigid arrangement within an otherwise closed group order within a hierarchical order.

Trivia
