Thouars
Thouars is a commune with 9622 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Deux -Sèvres in the Poitou -Charentes; it belongs to the district Parthenay and is the capital of the two cantons Thouars Thouars -1 and -2
Geography
The city is located in the north of the department of Deux -Sèvres on a plateau that dominates the river Thouet, a tributary of the Loire. Neighboring cities are: Parthenay, Parthenay, Saumur, Loudun.
History
- The name comes from Tudae arx ( citadel over the Thouet ).
- Pepin the Short and his son, the future Charles the Great, pillaged and destroyed the Gallo-Roman city in the year 762
- The Hundred Years' War Thouars was alternately occupied by the British and the French.
- Bertrand du Guesclin captured Thouars after a long siege, finally, on November 30, 1372 for France.
- The viscounty Thouars was in the 16th century imposed for the benefit of La Trémoille the Duchy ( duché ) and to the peerage (see Duchy of Thouars ).
- Thouars was during the Wars of Religion a stronghold of Protestantism, but lost after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes ( 1685) under Louis XIV, a large part of its population.

Attractions
- The Thouars (1635-1638) the castle was up to the extinction of the line in 1933, the residence of the Dukes of La Trémoille.
- The city walls, towers and Remparts originally date from the 12th and 13th centuries, but were renewed and rebuilt again and again: The Tour du Prince de Galles was temporarily used for storage of grain stores.
- The mighty Porte au Prévôt is laterally bordered by two semi-circular projecting towers.
