Three Comrades (novel)

Three Comrades is a work of Erich Maria Remarque. The book was written in 1936 in exile. It is dedicated to Ilse Jutta Remarque Zambona, Remarque's first wife.

Content

The book describes life in Germany during the 1920s: corruption, misery and hopelessness are widespread. The three comrades from the First World War, Robert Lohkamp, Gottfried Lenz and Otto Koester try to pass as a car mechanic in Berlin despite the depressing circumstances. To them comes the girl Pat ( Patricia Hollmann ), which is already marked by tuberculosis. Between Robert and Pat is an intense love relationship develops. At the end she dies and he is left alone.

Filming

The novel was filmed in 1938 by Frank Borzage under the English title Three Comrades. The three comrades were represented by Robert Taylor, Franchot Tone and Robert Young. The screenplay was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The film The Deer Hunter served three comrades as a loose template.
