Thurman Green

Thurman Alexander Green II ( born August 12, 1940 in Longview, Texas, † June 19, 1997 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz trombonist, composer and arranger.

Life and work

Green learned in junior high school trombone and moved in 1958 to study at Compton College to Los Angeles. From 1961 to 1965 he played as a regular soldier in a band of the Navy; In 1962, he attended the Navy School of Music in Washington DC, where he met Hamiet Bluiett. He then returned to Los Angeles, where he worked as a studio musician on numerous music recordings (including with Benny Golson and Gene Harris ) and movie soundtracks. In 1981, he received a composition fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University at Dominguiez Hills in 1986 he received his musical studies with a Master of Arts in Composition from. The composed this symphony he performed with a philharmonic orchestra.

In 1987 he went with Mercer Ellington on tour in Europe; then he has performed with Benny Carter 1988/89 and 1991 in Japan. In the 1990s he also worked in the bands of Gerald Wilson, Louie Bellson, the Clayton - Hamilton Big Band, Bill Berry / Frank Capp and Horace Tapscott. In 1991, he was an ensemble player with the Miles Davis album Dingo.
