Thyolo

Region

Thyolo designated a city and a mountain ( 1462 m) at the southern end of the Shire Highlands in Malawi as well as a district in 1715 km ² with a population of 458 976. The eastern slopes of the mountain form a large tea growing area. The monsoon from the Indian Ocean ensures adequate rainfall. On the eastern slope of the mountain Thyolo is located at 900 meters above sea level the same district capital, with 5800 inhabitants. 42,000 people live in the direct surroundings ( 2006 estimate ). From Thyolo perform a single-lane paved road with gravel edges attached to Blantyre and gravel roads after Luchenza and Bangula on the Shire River. The city is connected to the mains and has a airstrip. In the near Luchenza the railway line in the Malawian railway Lilongwe- Blantyre - Beira be reached.

Despite the Thyolo tea cultivation is considered as a poor district. The lowest rates of economic growth in Malawi in 1997-98 focused on poor and over-populated districts in the south, including Thyolo with 1.7%.
