Thyroid peroxidase

  • CAS Number: 9031-28-1

Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) (also: iodide peroxidase, systematic name: iodide peroxide oxidoreductase ) is the enzyme that catalyzes the first reaction step in the synthesis of thyroid hormones from the amino acid tyrosine. The enzyme is produced in all chordates. Defects in the enzyme due to mutations in the TPO gene in humans can lead to special forms of hypothyroidism.

Thyroid peroxidase which is a transmembrane protein that is present in the apical membrane of thyroid cells. In various autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland ( Autoimmunthyreopathien ) can autoantibodies against thyroid peroxidase which ( thyroid peroxidase antibodies, TPO -Ab ) were detected.

Catalyzed reactions

2 2 I- H2O2 ⇒ 2 2 H2O

Iodide is oxidized to iodine, which substituted immediately to tyrosine.

2 2 I- H2O2 ⇒ 2 2 H2O

Iodide is oxidized to iodine, which immediately substituted 3- iodotyrosine.
