Playing career

Association

Flowers began his career in 1984 at the Wolverhampton Wanderers and joined at the age of 19 years for a fee of 70,000 pounds FC Southampton, but where he became the first -choice goalkeeper in the 1989/90 season. Southampton also had twice loaned him out to Swindon Town, where Flowers in the late phase of the 1986/87 season came two appearances and five additional games added in the subsequent season.

He was henceforth one of the best goalkeepers in England and was characterized above all by its physical presence in the penalty area, above average technical skills and a good positional play in opposing shots on goal. The change to a more ambitious athletic club then followed very soon and Flowers went in 1993 for 2.4 million pounds - which was at that time a record for a goalkeeper in England - to the trained by Kenny Dalglish Blackburn Rovers, having previously an offer of Liverpool had rejected. At the same time, he played his first international match during a summer tour of the United States and has been used in the 2-2 draw against Brazil. Four days earlier, yet Chris Woods had been in the infamous 0-2 defeat against the hosts between the post and should not be more then play for England.

In Blackburn Flowers became the first-choice goalkeeper and won by the vice-championship in his first season after only one more year the English title. Although he had his competitors Shay Given always displaced in the club, there were increasing after its departure in 1997, the injury problems at Flowers. He was increasingly replaced by the Australian John Filan and, after the descent of Blackburn in 1999 for 1.1 million pounds to Leicester City.

With his new club Leicester City Flowers was first back to its former strength and won in 2000 with the English League Cup his second major club title. He remained there until 2003, but has been increasingly replaced after a few periods of weakness by Ian Walker and each briefly loaned out to Stockport County and Coventry City, before moving to the Premier League ended his playing career after the resurgence of Leicester City.

National

Flowers arrived on June 13, 1993 on his debut in the senior national team of England in a friendly against Brazil. In 1987, he played three times for the English U21, where it came to a settlement with the West German Junior Selection on September 8. In 1996 he was in the national squad for the Euro 1996 in their own country, but was - as elsewhere during his playing career - not to the tribe of goalkeeper David Seaman over. In the 1998 World Cup in France Flowers was like two years earlier - again nominated for England, but came in the tournament itself again not used and should deny no further play for his country more. The last time he was active for his country just before the World Cup, in the preseason game on 27 May 1998 against the team from Morocco.
