Timmy Mayer

Timothy " Tim " Smith ( born February 22, 1938 in Dalton, Pennsylvania, † February 28, 1964 Longford, Tasmania, Australia) was an American race car driver.

Tim Mayer began his career in 1959 in the Formula Junior. By the way, he studied at the prestigious Yale University English literature. In 1962 he went in Formula 1 with a factory-loaded Cooper T53 at the start. When the U.S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen but Mayer was forced to retire with a gearbox failure after 31 of 100 laps. It was his only race in the Formula 1 World Championship. The following year he went back in Formula Junior at the start, this time for the team of Ken Tyrrell which started racing cars of Cooper at that time. Despite the underlying material and the all-powerful racing cars of Brabham and Lotus Mayer was able to pull good results. Bruce McLaren promoted Mayer's talent and got him a contract for the 1964 Formula 1 season.

In the winter of 1963/64, Mayer went with Bruce McLaren Cooper in the Tasman series. Here, too, showed his talent and he was able to pull good points results. At the last race of the season of Americans killed in an accident. After a mistake Mayer lost control of his car. His car struck a barrier, bounced from there in a group of trees and Mayer was thrown from the cockpit. He died six days after his 26th birthday on the way to hospital.

His brother Teddy Mayer later became team manager at the racing team McLaren.
