Timo Penttilä

Timo Jussi Penttilä ( born March 16, 1931 in Teisko in Tampere, † February 25, 2011 in Helsinki) was a Finnish architect and urban planner.

Life

Timo Penttilä studied from 1950 to 1956 architecture at the Technical University in Helsinki. From 1959 to 1996 he had his own office together with Heikki Saarela and Kari Lind and designs included the City Theatre in Helsinki.

He taught from 1959 at the Technical University in Helsinki and had in 1968/69 is currently a visiting professor at the University of California at Berkeley. He was 1976-1980 President of the Finnish Museum of Architecture. In 1978 he became a member of the Finnish Academy of Technical Sciences.

Penttilä 1980 received a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and took the master class by Roland Rainer. In 1998 he became Professor Emeritus.

In 1969 he was honored at the Sao Paulo Biennial. In 1976 he was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Finland.
