The Timok (Cyrillic Тимок, Romanian Timoc ) is a right tributary of the Danube. The name is derived from the Timok original Latin name Timacus.

The river flows through Serbia, the last 15 kilometers of the river form a natural border to Bulgaria. The confluence with the Danube lies precisely in the north- west corner of Bulgaria and represents the northernmost point of Bulgaria

The river is formed from several shorter rivers that carry all the name Timok. The longest stretch of river is 203 km long. It starts at the river section Svrljiški Timok, the farthest point of the source Timok, and extends to the confluence with the Danube. The section at the mouth of the Danube is called Veliki Timok ( German: Big Timok )

Inflows and History

The Timok arises from the confluence of several tributaries, which carry all Timok in the name: The eastern tributary is the springing in the western foothills of the Balkan Mountains Trgoviski Timok. He entspring two sources that lie northwest of the Midschur summit. The western part of the Balkan Mountains is also called Tschiprowsko - Berkowska Planina ( Bulg Чипровско - Берковската планина ). The mountain is named after the village Chiprovtsi and the city Berkovitsa.

The Trgoviski Timok united in Knjaževac with the influent from left Svrljiški Timok to Beli Timok ( German: White Timok ). The river continues to flow north. In Zaječar also flows from the left of the Crni Timok ( German: Black Timok ) to do so. From here, the river then only Timok or Veliki Timok is ( German: Big Timok ) called.

About eight kilometers north of Zaječar is still flowing to the coming of boron Boreka.

The total length of the river is including its tributaries about 200 km, its basin covers an area of ​​4630 km ². In the lower reaches, the average water flow is 31 m³ / s

The Timok was eponymous for the region Timok Krajina, which includes the catchment area of ​​Timoks.

Economy

In the lower reaches of the river there are significant ore and lignite deposits. The degradation of these resources, in particular boron, the water quality of Timok impaired.
