Bor, Serbia

Bor (Serbian Cyrillic - Бор ) is a town in Serbia and location of one of the largest copper mines in Europe. It is the administrative seat of the homonymous Serbian Okruges (Eng. circle ), and the same Opština (English community).

1991, the population was about 60,000. According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia Bor had 54 046 inhabitants on 30 June 2005.

Geography

Boron is a modern city in the region Timok Krajina. It is surrounded by some spas as Banjsko Polje and Brestovacka Banja and the boron lake and the mountains and Crni Vrh Stol (German Black Lace ). Nearby is one of the largest caves in the Balkans, Lazareva Pecina ( Lazar's Cave) with a length of 9818 meters and an impressive interior.

History

In boron environment since 1856 is one of the largest palaces of the prince Aleksandar Karadjordjević I, who also served as quartermaster of Miloš Obrenović.

In 1903, the copper mine was opened near the town of Bor. This was an important step for the further development of boron.

Since 1947, boron has held the status of a city; at that time the city had 11,000 inhabitants.

Economy

On the edge of the town of Bor is one of the largest copper mines in Europe, has begun its use in 1903.
