Timothy J. Campbell

Timothy John Campbell ( born January 8, 1840 County Cavan, Ireland, † April 7, 1904 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician. He represented 1885-1889 and 1891-1895 the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Timothy John Campbell was born about four weeks before the wedding of Prince Albert of Saxe -Coburg and Gotha and the British Queen Victoria in County Cavan. The Campbell family then emigrated in 1845 to the United States and settled in New York City, where he attended public schools. He was apprenticed to the printer. Then he studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1869 and then began to practice in New York City. Between 1868 and 1873, and between 1875 and 1883 he sat in the New York State Assembly. Campbell was 1875-1883 Judge of the Fifth District Court ( district civil court) in New York City. Then he sat in the years 1884 and 1885 in the Senate from New York. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

On November 3, 1885, he was in the eighth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Samuel S. Cox. After a successful re-election in 1888, he suffered a defeat and retired after March 3, in 1889 the Congress of. As a Congressman he had presided over the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings (50th Congress ). In 1890 he was re-elected in the eighth constituency of New York and entered the successor of John H. McCarthy on March 4, 1891. In the congressional elections of 1892 he was elected the ninth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of Amos J. Cummings on March 4, 1893. In 1894 he suffered in his re-election bid a defeat and retired after the March 3, 1895 from the Congress of.

After his time Congress, he worked as a lawyer back in New York City. He died there on April 7, 1904 and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside ( Queens ).
