John H. McCarthy

John Henry McCarthy ( born November 16, 1850 in New York City; † February 5, 1908 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1889 and 1891 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Henry McCarthy was born about two and a half years after the end of the Mexican - American War in New York City and grew up there. He attended De La Salle Institute, the Christian Brothers and St. Francis Xavier College. He then went to commercial transactions. He studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1873 and then began to practice in New York City. He sat in the years 1880 and 1881 in the New York State Assembly. Between 1882 and 1888 he was a judge ( civil justice) in the fifth judicial district of New York City. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1888 for the 51st Congress McCarthy was in the eighth election district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Timothy J. Campbell on March 4, 1889. However, he resigned because of a judge item from his seat on 14 January 1891.

Governor David B. Hill appointed him on 11 January 1891 Judge at the District Court of New York City, there to fill a vacancy. McCarthy was later elected and re-elected to the same office and served there until his death on 5 February 1908. His body was interred in the Calvary Cemetery in Long Iceland City.
