David B. Hill

David Bennett Hill ( born August 29, 1843 in Havana, Schuyler County, New York, † October 20, 1910 in Albany, New York ) was an American politician and 1885-1892 Governor of the State of New York. Between 1892 and 1897 he represented his state in the U.S. Senate.

Early years and political rise

David Bennett was born in the former Havana in New York State. The place is called Montour Falls today. After attending the public schools he studied law. In 1864, his approval was obtained as a lawyer. Then he started in Elmira to work in his new profession. In the year 1864 he became a lawyer of this city. Hill was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1871 and 1872 he was a member and president of the New York State Assembly. In Elmira, he was from 1880 to 1881 the city council and mayor in 1882.

Governor of New York

Between 1882 and 1885, was David Hill as Lieutenant Governor of New York Deputy Governor Grover Cleveland. After this had been elected to the U.S. President and therefore gave up his governorship, Hill had to take over his duties on January 6, 1885. After he was confirmed in each case in the elections of 1885 and 1888, he was able to remain in this position until January 1, 1892. At this time the child labor protection has improved and has taken measures to protect forests. Also in Hills office was the first execution in New York instead of using the electric chair.

U.S. Senator

On January 1, 1891 David Hill was elected to succeed William M. Evarts in the U.S. Senate. The legislative session began on March 4, 1891. Hill but did not join his new post immediately, but only finished his term as governor. His mandate in Congress, he took up until 7 January 1892. In the Senate he was chairman of the Immigration Committee. D.C. During his time in Washington Hill competed unsuccessfully in 1894 to a second term as governor. For the next Congressional elections, he did not run. Therefore, he resigned from the Senate on March 3, 1897.

After the end of his time as a senator, he retired from politics and worked as a lawyer. David Hill died in October 1910 and was buried in Montour Falls.
