John T. Hoffman

John Thompson Hoffman ( born January 10, 1828 in Ossining, Westchester County, New York, † March 24, 1888 in Wiesbaden, Germany ) was an American politician and 1869-1873 Governor of the State of New York.

Early years and political rise

John Hoffman attended Union College until 1846. After a subsequent law studies he began in New York City to work as a lawyer. Hoffman was a member of the Democratic Party and was there to society of Tammany Hall. In 1848 he was a member of the Executive Board of his party in the state of New York. Between 1860 and 1864 he was town clerk in New York City and from 1865 to 1868 he was mayor of that city. In 1866, he competed unsuccessfully for the governorship.

Governor of New York and other CV

In 1868, John Hoffman was then but elected governor of his state. After a re-election in 1870 he was able to hold that office between January 1, 1869 to January 1, 1873. During this time, the Syracuse University was founded. In addition, a new Capitol building was planned. After the end of his governorship Hoffman retired from politics and devoted himself to his private interests. He died in 1888 in Wiesbaden and was buried in his birthplace of Ossining. Ex - Governor Hoffman was married to Ella Starkweather.
