Edward Murphy, Jr.

Edward Murphy Jr. (* December 15, 1836 in Troy, New York; † August 3, 1911 in Elberon, New Jersey ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party, representing the New York State in the U.S. Senate.

After attending school in his home sat Edward Murphy his education at St. John 's College in the Bronx continued where he made his degree in 1857. Then he hit a career as a businessman in the brewing industry.

From 1864 to 1866 Murphy was a member of the City Council of Troy; 1875-1883 he held the office of mayor of this city. In 1892 he was elected for the Democrats in the U.S. Senate in Washington, where he prevailed against the Republican incumbent Frank Hiscock. Six years later he lost his hand in the re-election attempt Republican Chauncey Depew and had on March 3, 1899 from the Senate retire. During his time as a senator, he was, among other things the committee for relations with Canada.

As a result, Murphy went back to his business activities. He became president of the Troy Gas Co. and Vice President of the Manufacturers' National Bank in Troy.
