Henry A. Foster

Henry Allen Foster ( born May 7, 1800, Hartford, Connecticut, † May 11, 1889 in Rome, New York) was an American lawyer and politician, who represented New York State in both chambers of Congress.

Career

Henry Allen Foster was born in the beginning of the 19th century in Hartford. In his childhood, the family moved to Cazenovia. He attended community schools. Foster studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1822 and commenced practice in Oneida County. Between 1827 and 1831, and from 1835 to 1839 Guardianship and estate Richter ( surrogate ) in Oneida County. In addition, he held in the years 1829 and 1830 and the years 1833 and 1834 the post of Supervisor in the Town of Rome. He sat 1831-1834 in the Senate from New York. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1836 for the 25th Congress, he was in the 17th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeds Rutger B. Miller and Joel Turrill took on March 4, 1837 which had previously together represent the district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He retired after March 3, 1839, from from the Congress.

After his conference time he went to Rome again his work as a lawyer after. He was appointed as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Silas Wright. This mandate he held on 30 November 1844 to 27 January 1845, when a successor was elected. He was 1864-1872 Judge of the New York Supreme Court for the Fifth District. Then he held the post of President of the Board of Trusstees at Hamilton College. In addition, he was vice president of the American Colonization Society. On May 11, 1889, he died in Rome and was then buried in the same cemetery.
