Francesc "Tito" Vilanova i Bayo ( born September 17, 1968 in Bellcaire d' Empordà, Girona Province ) is a former Spanish footballer and current football coach.
From 1 July 2012 until July 19, 2013, he was head coach of FC Barcelona. He took over the post of Josep Guardiola, whose assistant coach, he was the previous four years.
Career
Player
Vilanova played in his youth together with Josep Guardiola of FC Barcelona. While Guardiola made it into the first team, Vilanova remained at FC Barcelona B. In 1990, he left Barcelona in the direction UE Figueres, for he spent two years in the Segunda División and played in the 1991/92 season just missing out on promotion. His first top-flight, he played on September 6, 1992 to Celta Vigo in a 0-2 away defeat against Deportivo La Coruña. During his three-year stay in Vigo he came in his last two years very little used and denied doing a single game in the starting eleven. It was followed in the summer of 1995 the transfer to CD Badajoz. After a year he transferred to RCD Mallorca, with her in the Primera climb in the season 1996/97 Liga. After playing in the following season for UE Lleida, he joined after this season FC Elche. His career eventually ended in UDA Gramenet, in which he played from 2000 to 2002.
Coach
After his playing career Vilanova was first coach of FC Palafrugell and later Technical Director of Terrassa FC. In 2007 he became an assistant coach Josep Guardiola FC Barcelona B. The duo led Barcelona B in the 2007/ 08 season to the rise in the Segunda División B. Due to their success were both after the FC Barcelona Frank Rijkaard and his assistant coach Johan Neeskens had dismissed at the end of this season, promoted to the first team. In her first year coach at FC Barcelona in the 2008 /09 season, the coaching team could win the treble of championship, cup and Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and Club World Cup.
On November 22, 2011 Vilanova underwent successful surgery due to his parotid gland cancer in the Hospital de la Vall d' Hebron. It turned out for almost three weeks. The club doctor declared him " fully healed " in May 2012 for.
After head coach Guardiola had announced his resignation to the end of the season on 27 April 2012, President Sandro Rosell Vilanova appointed on the same day as his successor. On 15 June 2012, he signed a contract with maturity over two years until 30 June 2014.
In December 2012, Vilanova ill again parotid gland cancer, which had a further operation result. Following up Vilanova underwent a six-week chemotherapy and radiation treatment. During this time, represented him to be an assistant coach Jordi Roura. On July 19, 2013 his illness forced him to resign as head coach of FC Barcelona.
