Tivoli is a village in Dutchess County in the U.S. state of New York. In 2000, the city had 1163 inhabitants. The Village was incorporated in 1872 from parts of Upper Red Hook Landing and Madalin and is located in the northwest of the Town of Red Hook. It is thus the northernmost settlement in the county and is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area Poughkeepsie - Newburgh - Middletown. The town is located entirely within the Hudson River Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.

History

The region was part of the Schuyler patent, with the 1788 some of the Towns and Villages were established in what is now Dutchess County and the region around Poughkeepsie. Tivoli grew out of two earlier settlements, Upper Red Hook Landing and Madalin, which were combined in 1872 to the Village of Tivoli. Eleanor Roosevelt lived in the 1890s in Tivoli.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, Tivoli has an area of 4.7 km ², of which 4.6 km ² of land and 0.1 km ² omitted ( = 1.68 %) to water.

The district of the town is crossed by two main roads. County Route 78 (CR 78) - the former New York State Route 402 - is the Broadway and ending at the Hudson River where a ferry took off earlier to Saugerties in Ulster County. New York State Route 9G leads on the border of the Village along and intersects with CR 78

Management

The local government is up to five elected officials who meet in the Watts De Peyster Fireman's Hall to its meetings. It consists of the mayor, a deputy and three aldermen.

At the time of the census of 2000, there were 1163 Tivoli people. The population density was 255.1 people per km ². There were 531 housing units at an average 116.5 per km ². The population consisted of Tivoli 95.70 % White, 0.43 % African American, 0.17 % Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.69 % reported other races to belong and 2.06 % from two or more races. 2.92 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
