Tobias Querfurt

Tobias Querfurt the Elder ( * 1660, † September 13, 1734 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German painter, etcher and iron cutter. He was court painter to the Duke Rudolf August and Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig and first inspector of the royal collection of paintings in the castle Salzdahlum.

Life

Cross Furts origin is unknown. He is first detected in 1674 Salzdahlum where Herzog Anton Ulrich 1688-1694 had built his summer residence. In 1686, cross- ford received a grade. His responsibilities included the first lessons in drawing, which was founded in 1687 Knight Wolfenbüttel as well as design and engraving work for the ducal Münzwerkstätte.

Princely Court Painter 1691-1714

In 1691 he married the daughter of his coming from Hamburg fellow painter Joachim Luhn ( 1640-1717 ). Together with this and the painter and stage designer Johann Oswald Harms created cross- ford 1689-1697 a variety of wall and ceiling paintings in castle and church Salzdahlum. In the Parnassgrotte in the palace garden he painted a ceiling painting with the glorification of the Principality of Brunswick. From his work as a portraitist of the Wolfenbüttel court society witnessed 18 portraits in the ball room of the Wolfenbüttel Castle, however, are not preserved. At work on the new Brunswick opera house he was involved in 1691. Since 1698, he was also responsible for the theatrical scenery in the Duchy as the successor of JO Harms. On behalf of Duke Anton Ulrich cross the ford extended Salzdahlumer art collection through purchases. He was, in 1686, together with Duke Ludwig Rudolf in Italy to buy there painting. Cross- ford was the first in the series of Salzdahlumer Gallery inspectors, which ended in 1807 with Anton Weitsch. In 1710 he published a " Kurtze description of the Princely pleasure palace Salzdahlum ", which also contains the view and floor plan drawings.

Dismissal and change of residence

Shortly after Herzog Anton Ulrich also cross ford converted to Catholicism in 1710, which eventually led to his dismissal in 1714 by the new anti-Catholic adjusted sovereign August Wilhelm. He was referring to 1734/1735 a ducal grace money, but moved in 1715 to the Catholic Corvey. In the years 1719/1720 and 1730 he lived in Hamburg and in 1724 and 1727 in Hildesheim. Querfurt lived since 1733 back in Wolfenbüttel, where he died in 1734. He was buried in the Catholic monastery church at nearby Dorstadt.

His sons August (1696-1761), Johann Hermann and Tobias Querfurt this year were also painters. His pupil was the later Prussian court painter Johann Friedrich Wentzel ( 1670-1729 ).
