History

The Toblerone was invented in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann chocolatiers. The name is a contraction of " Tobler " and " Torrone ", the Italian name for honey and almond nougat. The Toblerone came already in the typical prismatic shape on the market. The form is legally protected since 1909. About the triangular shape of the Toblerone there are various legends. Mostly it is assumed that Theodor Tobler of the local mountains, including the Matterhorn, with its characteristic triangular shape itself had inspired. But according to Theodor's sons were dancers of the Paris Revue Folies Bergere, who had formed into a pyramid during a performance in their red and cream- colored dress, model for Toblerone. The original logo on the packaging showed an eagle with Swiss and Bernese flag in its talons, behind a mountain backdrop. Only in the 1960s appeared on the Matterhorn on the small side triangle. In 2000 it moved to the longitudinal side of the Toblerone. Hidden inside is a bear as a reference to the city of Bern.

1969 was first introduced in addition to the "classic" Toblerone in different sizes another Toblerone Product: Toblerone blacks (now called Toblerone Dark ). In 1973, the white, in the 1990s the blue, 2008 purple Toblerone " Fruit & Nut " with raisins and 2009, the variety " Honey & Crisp ".

The merger with Philippe Suchard, the inventor of the Milka brand, the company Inter Food was created in 1970. By a further merger with the traditional Bremer coffee roaster Jacobs was born in 1982 finally Jacobs Suchard. Since 1990, include the trademarks of Jacobs Suchard, including Tobler, the U.S. food group Kraft Foods, who acquired the majority of Jacobs Suchard.
