Tokaj wine region

Tokaj [ tokɒj hɛɟɒljɒ ] (such as " area on the foothills at Tokaj ' ) is the Hungarian geological and geographical name of a certain Hungarian territory about north of the town of Tokaj and at the same time the name of the Tokaj region, where the famous sweet wine Tokaj is grown. It is essentially the slopes of Zempléni - hegység ( = Tokaj Mountains; formerly called " Eperies Tokaj - Ore ").

In common parlance, the term Tokaj wine region is nowadays used in Hungary as a label for the wine-growing region, officially Tokaji borvidék ( Tokaj wine region ). This wine region consists of 28 wine-growing villages who cultivate about 5,800 hectares of vineyard, which is planted exclusively with white varieties.

Slovakia, too, must their region as a wine region Tokaj designate as a suit of Hungary was rejected by the EU. The Hungarians call the region Tokaj wine region as the gateway between the Carpathians and the Puszta in the Great Hungarian Plain. In 2002, the UNESCO Tokaj declared as a cultural landscape as a World Heritage Site.
