Toqtar Ongharbajuly Äubäkirow ( Kazakh Cyrillic Тоқтар Оңғарбайұлы Әубәкіров, Kazakh- latin Toqtar Oñğarbayulı Äwbäkirov; Russian Токтар Онгарбаевич Аубакиров / Toktar Ongarbajewitsch Aubakirow; * July 27, 1946 in Karaganda, Kazakhstan ) is a Kazakh military pilot and astronaut. In 1991, he was the first Kazakh in the universe.

Career

Äubäkirow graduated from the Academy of the Air Force and held as a parachutist and pilot test the rank of Major General of the Soviet Air Force before he was selected as a cosmonaut.

On 2 October 1991 he started together with the Austrian Franz Viehböck and the Russian Alexander Volkov, Soyuz TM -13 from Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome and spent eight days in space. He was also the first former Soviet citizens who flew without completed cosmonaut training into space because he was preferred - the participation of a Kazakh cosmonaut was part of the contract terms to Baiqongyr between Kazakhstan and Russia.

Since 1993 until his retirement he was Director General of the National Aeronautics and Space Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He was also a deputy in the Kazakh Parliament.
