Toledo Bend Reservoir

The Toledo Bend Reservoir is a reservoir on the Sabine River in Texas and Louisiana. The lake has an area of 749 km ², making it the largest man-made water surface in the southern U.S. and the fifth largest in the entire United States (after Lake Powell, Lake Sakakawea, Lake Oahe and Fort Peck Lake ). The hydroelectric power plant can produce electricity with 92 megawatts. The dam is in the northwest corner of Newton County in Texas and Louisiana. The purpose of the system are water supply, hydropower generation and recreation.

Construction of the dam

1949 was established for the project, the Sabine River Authority of Texas and Sabine River Authority 1950, State of Louisiana.

1959 featured the two states $ 30 million available. The land was acquired in 1963, construction began in 1964. The Massman -Johnson Construction Company was the general contractor. At the end (1969 ) Texas had paid an estimated $ 70 million. The dam was built by the two States without help from the federal government. In October 1966, the Wasseraufstau began, the power plant began in 1969 with its operation.

The reservoir Toledo Bend has a shore line of about 2000 km in length and offers almost unlimited opportunities for regeneration through water sports, fishing and other activities.
