Tolomeo Gallio

Tolomeo Gallio ( born September 25, 1527 Cernobbio near Como, † February 3, 1607 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church and since 1595 Duke of Alvito.

Gallio began his spiritual work in the service of Cardinal Cesare Trivulzio, after which he worked as a secretary for Cardinal Taddeo Gaddi and as private secretary to Giovanni Angelo de Medici. He was Bishop of Martorano and later Archbishop of Manfredonia. Pope Pius IV raised him on March 12, 1565 Cardinal Deacon of the titular church of Sant'Agata dei Goti. 1587 elevated him to cardinal priests, Pope Sixtus V of the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo. In 1587 he made him bishop of Albano, and in 1589 Bishop of Sabina. In 1591 he became bishop of Frascati in 1600 and Bishop of Porto. Gallio worked in the Roman Curia and in 1603 Dean of the College of Cardinals, and as such was given the bishopric of Ostia.
