Tom Bunk

Maria Tomas "Tom" Bunk ( born December 17, 1945 in Split, Croatia ) is a comic artist, painter and illustrator.

Life

Bunk is the son of the painter and stage designer Rudolf G. Bunk and his wife Marianne born Horl. He studied stage design and visual arts in Hamburg. In 1973 he moved to Berlin, got married and began to paint comic subjects in oil. After three successful exhibitions, he turned to drawing comics and was in 1976 part of the German underground comix scene. In Germany he was responsible for Carlsen, Ravensburger, Volksverlag and the bread Verlach.

His cartoons and comics that are reminiscent of the style of Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton and Gerhard Seyfried, appeared for 5 years from the satirical magazine Pardon, in other comics (eg wheel! , Zomix and Hinz and Kunz with Volker Reiche and Bernd Pfarr ) and anthologies. In 1983 he moved to New York and began to work for the magazine RAW, which was edited by Francoise Mouly and Art Spiegelman. From 1984, he has also worked with Art Spiegelman at the Garbage Pail Kids. It draws with Harvey Kurtzman on an adventure book by Kurtzman. Since 1990 he is a regular illustrator for MAD magazine, illustrated textbooks and manufactures Title images and illustrations for children's books. In 2008 he published his biographical comic A Berlin in New York in the FAZ and has some Quantoons exhibitions in Frankfurt and Dortmund and was involved in a comic exhibition at the Jewish Museum in Berlin and a comic exhibition. He also painted comic and surreal oil paintings and graphics.

Tomas Bunk lives with his second wife and two children in New Rochelle, New York.
