Tom Thabane

Motsoahae Thomas " Tom" Thabane ( born May 28, 1939 in Maseru, Basutoland ) is a politician from Lesotho. On June 8, 2012, he was elected Prime Minister of Lesotho.

Life

After schooling Thabane holds a degree in political science and English at the University of South Africa ( UNISA ) and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA ) from.

Thabane has held positions from 1966 to 1970 as Executive Assistant and as Deputy Executive Director ( Clerk ) of the Senate. After that, he was 1970-1972 Assistant of Administration Secretaries of Health and the Ministry of Education and subsequently as Chief Secretary ( Principal Secretary ) de facto Vice Minister of Justice 1972 until 1976. Having worked as a senior secretary in the Ministry of Health from 1978 to 1983 and in the State Department from 1983 to 1985 he was finally 1985-1986 Executive Secretary at the Home Office.

After the military coup of January 20, 1986 against Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan he was appointed by Prime Minister General Justin Metsing Lekhanya secretary of the ruling military council and the political adviser to the military. Subsequently, he served as Secretary of the Government (Government Secretary ) from 1988 to 1990 continue close associate Lekhanyas. In 1990 he was finally appointed by Lekhanya Minister of Foreign Affairs, Information and Broadcasting. In the elections of 1998 he was elected a deputy of the National Assembly and represented there as a member of the ruling party Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD), the constituency of Abia. Shortly after the election Prime Minister Bethuel Pakalitha Mosisili appointed him in June 1998 to the Minister of Foreign and International Relations. In a cabinet reshuffle in 2002 he was first Minister of the Interior and Minister of Public Security, and then in 2004 the Minister for Communications, Science and Technology.

In October 2006 he resigned and left with 17 other deputies of the ruling LCD. Subsequently, he was one of the founders of the All Basotho Convention (ABC), whose chairman he was in 2007. In 2007 he was on a joint list with the Lesotho Workers' Party ( LWP ) re-elected as deputies of the National Assembly. In the elections on 26 May 2012, he was again re-elected at the head of ABC. Here, the ABC increased from 17 to 30 of the 120 seats. With LCD and Basotho National Party ( BNP) Thabane formed a coalition and was appointed on 8 June 2012 to the Prime Minister. He is also the Minister of Defence, Police and National Security.
