Tomás Navarro Tomás

Tomás Navarro Tomás ( born April 12, 1884 in La Roda, Albacete Province, † September 16, 1979 in Northampton, Massachusetts) was a Spanish linguist, Hispanist, linguistic geographer, phoneticians and Optometrist, who taught in Spain and in the United States.

Life and work

Navarro Tomás studied in Valencia and Madrid Ramón Menéndez Pidal in Asin Palacios and Miguel ( 1871-1944 ). He received his doctorate in 1907. From 1912 to 1914 he studied in France, Germany and Switzerland and came up with the modern experimental phonetics in touch. Then he taught at 1910 in Madrid, founded Centro de Estudios Historical. He led the ( never completed ) project of the Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula ( Península Ibérica Atlas de la lingüístico, ALPI ) and edited the journal Revista Española de Filología. In 1930 he became Professor of Phonetics at the University Complutense of Madrid. 1934 elected him the Real Academia Española to their member. In 1939 he went to the United States and was until 1952 a professor at Columbia University in New York City.
