Tonhalle (Zürich)

The Kongresshaus Zurich is in Zurich on General-Guisan -Quai (formerly Alpenquai ), on the left bank of Lake Zurich between Claridenstrasse and Beethoven Street.

The building also includes the core components of the 1893-1895 built " new Tonhalle " (which replaced the old Tonhalle in today Sechseläutenplatz ), namely the large and the small large concert hall. For 1939 started as Mantelbau Kongresshaus include nine additional facilities for meetings and various events such as concerts or fairs as well as three restaurants and two bars.

History

The congress house was built in 1937-1939. Responsible architects were Max Ernst Haefeli, Werner Max Moser and Rudolf Steiger, who had, among other things, the Werkbund Neubühl, University Hospital Zurich, outdoor pool Allenmoos and the highrise built to palm. Along with the music hall, built by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Gottlieb Helmer in the style of historicism of the 1880s, the Congress House is a building complex.

History and architecture of the Kongresshaus are closely linked to the Swiss National Exhibition in 1939. The officials wanted to have the building completed by the opening of the exhibition. The time pressure, together with the limited and sensitive building site on the backfill, designed by city engineer Arnold Bürkli sea area, the more difficult task. New projects

By 2008, a controversial new building designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo was planned. Critics of the project complained that the construction of architecturally not in the other structures (such as the Red Castle ) insert. There were also voices that wanted to preserve the architecture of the current congress center. The new project was clearly rejected in the referendum of 1 June 2008. In June 2013, the Zurich City Council announced that it would waive all new plans and to undergo Kongresshaus including Tonhalle a renovation and partial extension.

Equipment

The large organ in the great hall of the Tonhalle was built in the years 1987 to 1988 by the organ builders Kleuker and Steinmeyer. At the discretion of the organist Jean Guillou consult. The abrasive loading instrument has 67 registers to four manual and pedal works. The play and Registertrakturen are mechanical.
