Toomas Tõniste

Toomas Tõniste ( born April 26, 1967 in Tallinn, Soviet Union) is an Estonian sailor and politician.

Life and sporting success

Toomas Tõniste graduated in 1985 from the school in Tallinn. Until 1997 he studied sports at the Tallinn Pedagogical University.

Toomas Tõniste started together with his twin brother Tõnu Tõniste in 1976 with the sailing. Four years later, took place in Tallinn, the sailing competitions of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. From 1987 to 1989, both three times Soviet Champion and 1983-1991 Estonian champion eight times. In 1990 she won the Kieler Woche and 1992 were European champions.

At the Olympic Summer Games in Seoul in 1988 won Toomas Tõniste together with his twin brother, the Olympic silver medal for the Soviet Union in sailing ( 470 class). At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona both won the bronze medal for Estonia in the same class. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta they disappointed with 10th place. 2006 Toomas was Tõniste World Champion and 2007 European Champion. 1994/95 and 2006/ 2007 he was Estonian sailing master.

Since 1994 Tõnu and Toomas Tõniste operate alongside the sailing also an entrepreneur. Toomas Tõniste has been politically active since 1998. He belongs to the Party Isamaa yes Res Publica Liit to. From 1999 to 2001 and 2006/2007 he was a member of the City Council of Tallinn. Since 2007, Toomas is Tõniste Member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ).

Toomas Tõniste is married. He has a daughter and two sons.
