Toronto 228th Battalion (NHA)

The 228th Battalion was a Canadian ice hockey team from Toronto, Ontario. The team played in the season 1916/17 in the National Hockey Association.

History

Since after the outbreak of the First World War many professional hockey players joined the Canadian Armed Forces, the National Hockey Association decided to season 1916/17 include a military team and the choice fell on the 228th Battalion from Toronto, in which some hockey players doing their military service. The season should be played in two halves, each with ten games, however, the 228th Battalion was shipped after the first ten games to Europe to the front, which is why the team play activities in the NHA could not finish and was dissolved. As the owner of the Toronto Blueshirts, Eddie Livingstone, not able to agree on a common game plan for the rest of the season with the other teams, he drew his own team back from the league and because of this conflict was in November 1917, the National Hockey League founded.
