Toronto Symphony Orchestra

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO ) is a Canadian orchestra in Toronto. Music Director of the TSO since 2004 Peter Oundjian. The TSO plays classical music.

The TSO was founded in 1922 as the New Symphony Orchestra of a group of Toronto musicians and the Vienna-born conductor Luigi from Kunits and gave in April 1923 his first concert in the Massay Hall in Victoria Street in Downtown Toronto. In 1927, the orchestra renamed in its present name. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra commissioned 1923-1982 regular concerts in the Massay Hall. Since the opening of Roy Thomson Hall in the fall of 1982, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is resident there.

In 2001 the orchestra with 7 million Canadian dollars in debt ran into financial difficulties. In subsequent years, the number of subscriptions of 20,000 in 2001 rose to 25,000 in the 2006/2007 season and the workload in the same period from 56% to 84%. More than 400,000 people a year visit the concerts of the orchestra.
