Region

Tounouga is a rural municipality in the department of Gaya in Niger.

Geography

Tounouga is the southernmost municipality of Niger. It is located on the left bank of the River Niger to the south of the city of Gaya and belongs to the large landscape Sudan. Tounouga bordered on the southwest by the neighboring state of Benin and to the southeast by the neighboring state of Nigeria. The municipality is divided into twelve administrative villages, 72 traditional villages and a hamlet. The main town of the country church is the administrative village Tounouga.

History

The village was founded by the people of Tounouga Tchianga that populated the area now departments Gaya in the 17th century. The rural community Tounouga was created in 2002 at a nationwide administrative reform. Their territory belonged until then, together with Tanda to Canton Gaya.

Population

At the 2001 census Tounouga had 29,444 inhabitants. For the year 2010 39.495 inhabitants were calculated.

Economy and infrastructure

The municipality is located in that narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, ranging from Tounouga to Malawa in the East and is operated in irrigated crop production for cash crops. In Tounouga there are several weekly markets. Market day is Friday in the capital Tounouga and Wednesday in the administrative villages Gatawani Kaina and Sabon Birni. By Tounouga National Highway 8, which connects the village with the neighboring city of Gaya runs.
